"Money alone
sets all the world in motion."
Publilius Syrus 1st Century B.C.E.
Money-everyone uses it every day of
our lives. You reach in your wallet and pull out a crumpled
one dollar bill
with
George Washington's picture or a brand new crisp $100 dollar bill
that a lot of people think looks like play money. But
have you ever wondered how money is made? Or what happens
to
really old money that looks like its going to fall apart if its used
one more time? Or what happens if money is printed
with a mistake? Can you believe that the Bureau prints
over $140 billion dollars
(nope, that's not a misprint) worth of currency each
year?! Did you know that paper money is not made out
of paper
(it's
cotton and linen) we just call it paper? Take the tour
at the Bureau of Engraving and Printing and find out all of these
secrets and much more! The Bureau of Engraving and
Printing (see the key word print in its name) prints money,
postage
stamps, White House invitations, military academy diplomas
and all Federal documents, BUT it doesn't mint coins-that's
done in Philadelphia and Denver.

" The things
I saw beggar the imagination. The visual evidence and
the verbal testimony were so overpowering...I
have reported what I saw and heard, but only part of it. For most of it,
I have no words. I made the visit deliberately,
in order to be in a position to give first-hand evidence of these things
if ever, in the future, there develops a tendency
to charge these allegations merely to propaganda."
General Dwight D. Eisenhower - April 12, 1945
Ohrdruff Concentration Camp
Atrocities
against humankind. Over six million citizens of the world
from every walk of life were tragically and horrifically tortured
and slaughtered for no other reason than for one man's attempt
to rule the world. The powerful, thought arousing US Holocaust
Memorial stands as a reminder to all mankind that we can never
again permit outrageous acts of inhumanity against one another
to happen, at anytime, or anyplace. As you proceed from floor
to floor, witnessing the sounds and faces of the boys and
girls, babies, women, and men - all helpless victims of the
Third Reich, it is impossible to leave this museum without
experiencing the realization of the evil mankind is capable
of rendering against each other if left unchecked. This museum
stands as a testimony to those helpless victims, that we shall
never permit another Holocaust. Due to the graphic displays
of the atrocities, it is recommended that children under the
age of 11 not visit the main exhibit; the US Holocaust Museum
has created two exhibits, the Wall of Remembrance and Daniel’s
Story, specifically for the younger group.
